ARTH 261: Art and Film

ARTH Department University of Michigan-Dearborn

Course Description

Throughout the twentieth-century, painters and sculptors have turned towards the medium of film to make art. This course examines the close relationship between film and visual art when art influences cinema and cinema influences art. Students analyze a movie by a selected filmmaker every week. In addition, concise texts by filmmakers, film historians, and art historians provide context for the development of experimental montage techniques, the relevance of visual art strategies to the art of film, and the discussion of intellectual and societal issues.
