HIST 3675: Palestine and the Palestinians in the Levant and the U.S. (1870-1970)
Course Description
In this course, students learn that Palestine has boundaries and that Palestinians have a history. This course examines Palestine's temporal and spatial history and the emergence of Palestinian consciousness. Participants learn about the specific and unique elements of the Palestinians' experiences within broader regional contexts of Ottomanism, colonialism, and immigration to the U.S. from the Levant. These developments coincided with narratives of Arabism, and Zionism over a century. A specific Palestinian identity developed at the turn of the twentieth century in response to these narratives on both sides of the water. In the U.S., political advocacy became intertwined with efforts to belong as U.S. citizens. (W, OC).
