ENGL 4370: Shakespeare: Tragedies and Romances
Course Description
This course explores Shakespeare's tragedies and romances, with particular attention to their genre as well as their relation to the cultural issues of Shakespeare's time. Students will learn to see Shakespeare as a dramatic craftsman and explore the question of his contribution to English literature: whether he saw himself as an innovator or inheritor of well-known stories from the classical tradition, Britain's chronicle histories, scripture, and legend. Shakespeare's narrative poems, as well as modern film adaptations, may also be featured.
