MUS 554: Opera for Pianists
Course Description
Prepares advanced pianists for success as repetiteurs and assistant conductors in opera houses. Students will be asked to play and sing (as pianists do, not with the vocal qualities of a professional singer) several arias or ensembles each week, which will familiarize them with the most commonly found repertoire in Young Artists Programs in the industry. A working knowledge of French, German, and Italian is assumed. We will discuss prompting, orchestration and reduction, and the role of the rehearsal pianist. 2 graduate hours. No professional credit. Prerequisite: Restricted to Graduates in the School of Music; others with instructor permission.
