CLASSICS 7L: Ecclesiastical Latin
Course Description
Ecclesiastical Latin encompasses far more than papal bulls and lives of saints: from the autobiographical Confessions of Augustine to the rich poetry of Venantius Fortunatus, from the History of Bede to the musical drama of Hildegard von Bingen, the language of early and medieval Christianity is far more than a footnote to Classical Latin. This introductory course places Ecclesiastical Latin center stage, giving students a thorough grounding in its distinct syntax, pronunciation, vocabulary, and historical context. No previous knowledge of Latin, Christianity, or church history required.
